Maya Black will teach English in Spain through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Black, who graduated with dual majors in genetics and in cell, molecular, and developmental biology, also minored in Spanish, which she has studied since kindergarten.

A native of Imperial, Pennsylvania, Black participated in a brief study abroad program in Spain previous to applying for a Fulbright. “During my study abroad in Madrid, I fell in love with the culture of Spain, and I am keen to return to teach English for an extended period of time,” Black said. “I was fascinated by how intensely Spaniards live in the moment – from being politically active, to simply always making time for friends. A Fulbright ETA in Spain is perfect for me as it provides a meaningful exploration of Spain to go beyond its surface level and analyze its history and position in the world, while also being able to give back through teaching English. I believe that learning should be reciprocal. Spain will provide me with learning opportunities through improving my Spanish and learning about its customs while teaching English.”

Black is interested in exploring the many facets of intercambios, or exchange, saying “I believe learning new languages begets further understanding among groups and is one way for the world to combat bigotry and misunderstanding among different cultures.” As a Diversity Officer for the Purdue Honors College, Black has had much experience breaking down complex identities and bridging differences to build relationships. Black hopes to use her time in Spain to gain a clearer understanding of Spain’s relatively progressive political climate, treatment of refugees, and healthcare system, saying, “I want to bring these lessons back to the United States as a guide for how to maintain our democracy and create space for disadvantaged groups.”

Black plans to enter the medical field after her return to the United States and bring equity and justice to her work.
